Tiby Named Preseason Second Team All-Horizon League

Panthers picked sixth in preseason League poll

ROSEMONT, Ill. (October 15, 2014) – University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior forward Matt Tiby (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale/Kirkwood CC) has been tabbed Preseason Second Team All-Horizon League in the annual poll of the conference's coaches, sports information directors and media, which was released this afternoon at the League media day.

A year ago, Tiby was a key figure on a Milwaukee team that won 21 games and made a trip to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning the Horizon League Championship. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 12.0 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per contest in 2013-14, with his rebounding total ranking sixth in the Horizon League. Tiby scored in double figures on 24 occasions and recorded six double-doubles last season, his first with the Panthers.

Tiby was at his best in big games and was named to the Horizon League Championship All-Tournament Team after putting up 11.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg in four outings. In the Panthers' semifinal round victory at top-seeded Green Bay, he accounted for 15 points and 10 rebounds and he also totaled 10 points and four boards against Villanova in the NCAA Tournament.

Joining Tiby on the Preseason All-Horizon League Second Team was Anton Grady (Cleveland State), Jordan Fouse (Green Bay), Kahlil Felder (Oakland) and Bobby Hain (Youngstown State).

Green Bay's Keifer Sykes, the 2014 Horizon League Player of the Year, was one of five players tabbed Preseason All-Horizon League First Team. Also collecting preseason first team accolades was Juwan Howard, Jr. (Detroit), Corey Petros (Oakland), Trey Lewis (Cleveland State) and Alec Peters (Valparaiso).

In the preseason poll, Milwaukee, which won the Horizon League Championship title in 2013-14, was slated to finish sixth in the Horizon League race. Defending regular-season champion Green Bay edged Cleveland State for first place, with Detroit, Valparaiso and Wright State rounding out the top five.

Trailing Milwaukee in the predicted order of finish was Oakland, Youngstown State and UIC.

Milwaukee opens the 2014-15 regular season November 14 at Auburn. Tenth-year head coach Rob Jeter returns three starters from last season's NCAA Tournament squad, including Tiby, senior guard Steve McWhorter (7.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 400 apg, 1.5 spg) and junior forward Austin Arians (11.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg).
