MILWAUKEE -
Championships in nine sports - including six on the women's side - gave the UW-Milwaukee Panthers their first ever James J. McCafferty Trophy, the MCC's all-sports award.
The Panthers finished tied for second with Butler a year ago, just one point behind last year's winner UIC. UW-Milwaukee is the third different school in as many years to win the McCafferty Trophy.
The Panthers women's championships came in basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field and swimming and diving. UWM also claimed the regular season championship in women's soccer and women's volleyball. The Panther's tallied 33 total points on the women's side, 10 more than any other school. On the men's side, UWM earned 20 points capturing championships in men's indoor and outdoor track and field and baseball.
UWM is the seventh institution to win the McCafferty Trophy, which has been presented to the league's all-sports champion since the MCC's inaugural season in 1979-80. Oral Roberts won the award for the first seven years of the league's existence, Evansville captured the 1986-87 and 1987-88 awards, Notre Dame earned seven straight from 1988-89 to 1994-95, while Northern Illinois captured the trophy in 1995-96. Butler won the next three prior to UIC winning last year's trophy.
A symbol of a successful broad-based athletic program, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the MCC to the member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points in conference championships. The trophy is presented in honor of James J. McCafferty, former Xavier University men's basketball coach and director of athletics, who served as the league's first commissioner from 1979-80.
Schools earn performance points based on their finish in all 18 sports the MCC offers. For the sports of men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, and softball, points are awarded based on combined regular season and championship finish. In the sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's golf, and men's and women's tennis, points are awarded based on finish in the conference championship.
